LEB Construction to put a lid on school roof leaks

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

LEB Construction has been instructed to replace the roof of Rhydypennau School to resolve ongoing leaks and issues

LEB Construction is delighted to announce it has been appointed to undertake works to replace the current roof at Ysgol Gymunedol Rhydypennau (Rhydypennau Community School).

Bidding for the works through Ceredigion County Council’s open tender system, LEB secured the project with a submission of c.£244,500 for the 1000 m2-plus roof area, with the six-week project due to commence in early 2023.

The decision to replace the existing roof with a new membrane and 2,163 roof tiles comes after it was deemed to no longer be efficient to continue to patch the roof after leaks, with the current system failing.

To replace the existing roof, comprising concrete interlocking tiles with felt underlay, LEB will initially erect a two-lift scaffold around the perimeter of the school, before, section by section, removing the existing roof covering and replacing with new.

The new system will not only provide a watertight finish, but will add a more modern look for the school. Meanwhile, the addition of new loft insulation will help to reduce energy bills and the school’s overheads.

By undertaking the works in sections, the need for temporary roofing has been removed, subsequently providing a cost saving for the client. Once the roof is stripped, Dupont’s Tyvek® Supro durable and water-resistant membrane will be laid onto the existing rafters before the new roof tiles are installed.

The metal roof-tiling system is being sourced from BRITMET and will be installed alongside new soffits, gutters and downpipes.

LEB Construction has installed BRITMET’s system before and has attained accreditation as an approved installer, which means that the school will benefit from the manufacturer’s 40-year product warranty.

Additionally, LEB is delighted to welcome Jason Bowen to the team. Jason will be the Contracts Manager for this contract and arrives with an impressive CV, most recently delivering projects valued between £5 million and £7 million. We’re pleased that Jason’s experience on such large projects can be utilised to coordinate the works with the school.

This latest project comes on the back of a successful 2022 that saw LEB Construction awarded landmark projects such as Cardigan Primary School and Lampeter Wellbeing Centre.

Luke Baker, Managing Director, LEB Construction Limited, said: “We have been aware of the roofing issues at Rhydypenau School for some time and are delighted that the funds have been secured to bring the roof up to spec and secure from water ingress. The 40-year warranty the system provides will provide the school with product certainty for decades to come. We look forward to working with the Ceredigion team again and delivering this on their behalf.”
